Come hear the meeting of three musical heavyweights from three different countries—Canada, the UK, and France. Pivoting effortlessly between melancholy and joy, the magnificent lyricism of these works conveys a world of feeling. You’ll hear Schubert’s Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano in A Minor, practically the only substantial composition extant for the arpeggione, a six-stringed guitar-cello hybrid.
The acclaimed musicians taking the stage are all precious partners of the Orford Music Academy.

Guillaume Sutre
Guillaume Sutre was only eighteen years old when he won the Alberto Curci International Violin Competition in Naples, Italy and the International Piano Trio ARD Competition in Munich. The list quickly fills out with a first prize at the European Chamber Music Competition FNAPEC (1989), first prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition (USA 1990), winner of the Prix de la Fondation Charles Oulmont (1989), first prize at the Lily Laskine Competition (1991) and winner of the Prix Georges Enesco de la SACEM (1994). In 1999, he was named Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government.Mr. Sutre was attracted to chamber music early in his career. In 1986, he founded the Trio Wanderer; ten years later he became the first violinist of the Ysaÿe Quartet, a post he held for almost twenty years until their farewell concert in 2014 in Paris’ Cité de la Musique. His vast repertoire of over 600 works features all the string chamber music of Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, all Mozart Violin sonatas and all 68 Haydn quartets. He has performed at many of the most prestigious venues around the world, Carnegie Hall in New York, Philadelphia PCMS, Washington Library of Congress, Jerusalem YMCA, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Rencontres Musicales d’Evian, La Roque d’Anthéron, Les Grandes Heures in Saint-Emilion, Berlin Philharmonie, Herkulessaal in München, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Wigmore Hall in London, Musikverein in Vienna, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Teatro della Pergola in Florence, Milano Società del Quartetto, Teatro di San Carlo in Napoli, Lisbon Gulbenkian Foundation, Bilbao Sociedad Filarmónica, Zurich Tonhalle, Addis Abeba Music School, Amazon Theatre in Manaus, Hanoi Opera House, with such performers as Gautier Capuçon, Renaud Capuçon, Gérard Caussé, Ana Chumachenco, Valentin Erben, Nelson Freire, Lynn Harrell, Frans Helmerson, Gary Hoffman, Leonidas Kavakos, Martin Lovett, Yo-Yo Ma, Sabine Meyer, Enrico Pace, Jean-Claude Pennetier, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Michel Portal, Pascal Rogé, Janos Starker. In addition to his activity as a chamber musician, he also plays as a soloist with the Sinfonia Varsovia, Berlin RIAS Orchestra, Göttingen Symphony Orchestra, RAI Orchestra in Napoli, Franz Liszt Orchestra of Budapest, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, Orchestre National de Montpellier, Orchestre National d’Auvergne, Orchestre National de Bretagne, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal (Liège) and with conductors such as Christophe Coin, Jean-Jacques Kantorow, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Sheldon Morgenstern, David Robertson, Stefan Sanderling, Arie Van Beek.
His recordings for Sony Classical, Decca, Harmonia Mundi, Naïve, Aeon, Ysaÿe Records, Hortus and Sonarti have received the highest distinctions in France and internationally. His live recording of the complete duets of Haydn and Mozart with violist Miguel da Silva has been hailed by critics as definitive, his CD featuring the quartets of A. Boucourechliev was awarded the Charles Cros Academy’s Grand Prix du Disque, and his two recent albums, J. Woelfl: The Paris Years (Sonarti) and Pensés Intimes (Hortus / WWI), received the 5 of Diapason.
Invited by the Faculty of Music of the University of Montreal, he will be professor of violin and chamber music in 2021. Previously, he was professor of a string quartet class at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris, professor of violin and director of chamber music for strings at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in Los Angeles, and was part of the inaugural faculty of The Tianjin Juilliard School in China. He has taught master classes at Juilliard, IU Bloomington Jacobs School of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, University of South California, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, McGill Schulich School of Music, Jerusalem Music Center, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Aldeburgh Britten-Pears Foundation, Zeister Muziekdagen, Festival Internacional de Inverno in Campos do Jordão, Seoul National University, Villecroze Musical Academy.
Mr. Sutre is passionately committed to imparting his knowledge upon musicians of younger generations. He regularly performs with his students and in 2014 he co-produced the Calidore Quartet’s debut CD. He regularly serves on juries of prestigious competitions, such as the Long-Thibaud International Violin Competition in Paris, the A. Postacchini International Violin Competition in Italy and the International String Quartet Competition in Bordeaux.
Guillaume Sutre began his studies in Douai, France; he then entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris at age fourteen with Gérard Poulet and Jean-Claude Pennetier. After finishing his studies in France, he attended Indiana University at Bloomington to study with Josef Gingold, Franco Gulli, Menahem Pressler and Janos Starker. He subsequently studied in Cologne with the Amadeus Quartet.
Michel Strauss
Cellist considered as one of the most accomplished French musicians of his generation, Michel Strauss studied in France and the United States with Paul Tortellier, Maurice Gendron and Aldo Parisot. Cello teacher at the Conservatoire national supérieur de Paris since 1987, he has trained many musicians of the new generation and set up a great number of cultural events and workshops in the United States, Asia the Netherlands and France to promote young performers.Principal Cello for the Nouvel orchestre philharmonique de Radio-France from 1980 to 1990, Mr. Strauss performed with many orchestras in France and abroad, and has interpreted many concertos dedicated to him. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with several artists including Henriette Puig-Roget, Tibor Varga, Georges Pludermacher, Gérard Jarry, Aldo Parisot, Serge Collot, Jean-Claude Pennetier, Gérard Caussé, Bruno Pasquier, and the legendary Sándor Végh.
His worldwide career led him to give concerts on all major international stages in Europe, but also in Australia, Canada and the United-States including New York’s Carnegie Hall.In recent years, his presence on stage and in the cultural life of China and Korea has grown considerably. Michel Strauss now teaches at the Central Conservatory of Beijing in addition to his positions at the Conservatoire national supérieur de Paris and at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague.
Michel Strauss is the founder and Artistic Director of the Musique de chambre à Giverny Festival.
Ronan O’Hora

Moreover, O’Hora is blessed with meticulous taste – there was not a vulgar, swooning or overstated passage in the program.” The Washington PostThe British pianist Ronan O’Hora has performed throughout the world, playing with such orchestras as the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Symphony, Royal Philharmonic and English Chamber orchestras, the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Hallé Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, Zurich Tonhalle, Netherlands Radio Chamber, Philharmonia Hungarica, Brno Philharmonic, Winnipeg Symphony, Florida Philharmonic and Queensland Philharmonic.
He has performed in every major country in Europe as well as in the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa working with leading conductors such as Kees Bakels, Matthias Bamert, Hans Vonk, James Judd, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Bramwell Tovey, Hans Vonk, Edo de Waart, Takuo Yuasa and Lothar Zagrosek as well as appearing at many notable music festivals like Salzburg, Gstaad, Ravinia, Montpelier, Bath, Harrogate and Brno.
Born in Manchester in 1964, Ronan O’Hora studied there at the Royal Northern College of Music with Professor Ryszard Bakst. He has won many important awards that have included the Dayas Gold Medal, the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians and the Stefania Niekrasz Prize, which is awarded every five years to an outstanding exponent of Chopin. Broadcasts on radio and television world-wide have included a televised recital for the Chopin Society in Warsaw, a televised performance of Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto with the Netherlands Radio Symphony, two programmes of chamber music by Mozart for BBC TV, as well as over eighty concerts on BBC Radio 3.
Ronan O’Hora has made highly regarded recordings on the Tring International, Virgin Classics, Dynamic and Fone labels in which he has covered concertos by Mozart, Grieg and Tchaikovsky in addition to solo piano repertoire by Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, Schumann, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Satie plus chamber music by Fauré, Britten, Debussy, Dvorak and Mozart in a discography which extends to over thirty CDs. Reviewed as its Editor’s Choice, The Gramophone Magazine wrote ” The Grieg Piano Concerto [with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under James Judd] demands imagination and great delicacy of feeling as well as bravura without barnstorming if its eternal freshness is to be caught on record. Ronan O’Hora is the Head of Keyboard Studies and Head of Advanced Performance Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
