    • Festival Orford Musique 2023 : Hommage à Ella Fitzgerald

      Concert

Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal (ONJ) and the ONJ String Ensemble (ECO) are thrilled to welcome vocalist Laura Anglade for a night of music from the Jerome Kern Songbook—the one Ella Fitzgerald went back to time and time again throughout her career. The ONJ used the original recordings to reassemble the Nelson Riddle arrangements written for Ella herself.

The 22 ONJ members, led by Jean-Nicolas Trottier, bring back the excitement and artistry of those immortal sessions.

      Laura Anglade
ICI Musique tagged French and American vocalist Laura Anglade as one of their five female jazz musicians to watch. Her voice has something of the great 20th-century divas to it—Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O’Day—but is no less one of a kind. And her ability to tell a story in song bespeaks a soul far older than her years.

Laura’s international tours have taken her to the Town Hall in New York City, the Olympia in Paris, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Ace Theatre Hotel in Los Angeles, and the main stage at Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. She opened for Gregory Porter at last summer’s Victoria Jazz Festival and for Melody Gardot on a fall tour of the USA and Europe that included performances on the American East and West Coasts and in the UK and France. She is currently based in Toronto.

Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal
The Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal (ONJ) was founded in 2012 by Jacques Laurin and backed by Christine Jensen, Marianne Trudel, Jean-Pierre Zanella, Samuel Blais, André Leroux, Frank Lozano, Alexandre Côté, Jocelyn Couture, Aron Doyle, David Carbonneau, Bill Mahar, Dave Grott, David Martin, Jean-Nicolas Trottier, Bob Ellis, Rémi-Jean Le Blanc, and Kevin Warren.

ONJ performs and promotes the world orchestral jazz repertoire, with special emphasis on Canadian works. The core ensemble comprises 22 regular musicians, bolstered to date with over a hundred of this country’s finest guest artists, a dozen distinguished guest conductors, and an additional contingent of leading international stars.

Since its beginnings, ONJ has centred its efforts on developing and delivering incredible concerts. It’s a recombinant ensemble, always pushing back the limits of current notions of pop and jazz, reconfiguring itself at need as a tentet, big band, string orchestra, or studio orchestra.

ONJ has thus far commissioned ten new works from some of Canada’s top artists—Marianne Trudel, Christine Jensen, Mireille Boily, Jean-Nicolas Trottier, John Hollenbeck, Joe Sullivan, and Jean Derome—seven of which it has premiered. It has released three recordings based on those commissions: Marianne Trudel’s Dans la Forêt de ma Mémoire, nominated for the 2016 Prix Opus Album of the Year, Christine Jensen’s Under the Influence, winner of the 2018 Prix Opus for Album of the Year, and Jean-Nicolas Trottier’s The Mystic Mind, nominated for the Prix Opus as Album of the Year in 2020.

ONJ also took the 2018 Prix Opus Concert of the Year award for its Festival International de Jazz de Montréal appearance under the direction of drummer and composer John Hollenbeck and featuring vocalist Theo Bleckmann.

Since it began, ONJ has performed more than 700 works by at least 80 Canadian and international composers and arrangers and is closing in on its 100th concert.
