With the help of the Marcelle and Jean Coutu Foundation, Orford Music and Sainte-Marguerite School in Magog have developed very special music program for children. The program, now in its second year, is based on the famous « El Sistema »: Venezuela’s system of national youth orchestras which has reached more than 700 000 children since 1975 and whose goals are to teach good citizenship, creativity, self-reliance and compassion through music.
This year, the children participating in the program were invited to take part in a day of rehearsals with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers. It was a thrilling experience for all our young musicians, and a chance for the adults to reconnect with the simple joy of making music together.
Our group also made two public appearances this spring to show off their progress. They accompanied singer Vincent Vallières at a benefit event for the Christian Vachon Foundation, as well as giving a brief concert during Orford Music’s own benefit event in July, during which Alfred played his Allegro beautifully!
